Good news for cyclists across Ireland with changes to Covid-19 rules

We're not out of the woods yet with Covid-19 but things are looking much better in both the Republic and the North. And now restrictions are being relaxed across Ireland in a manner that immediately allows for more cycling than in recent months

Cyclists in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are now enjoying the first significant easing of restrictions after months of lock-down conditions due to Covid-19.

While full group
training is still not permitted and events still cannot take place, the latest
relaxation of restrictions facilitates more cycling than in recent months.

Furthermore, the new rules will hopefully prove just the first in a series of changes for the better as the vaccine roll-out continues and the number of new Covid-19 cases remains relatively low.

Republic of Ireland

From today’s
date, April 12th, people can move around their home county with no restriction
and can also move around within a 20km radius of home.

That ‘20km radius
from home’ means anyone who lives close to a county boundary can cross over
into another county as long as they stay within 20km of their home.

As well as cyclists
being able to train alone in their home county and/or within a 20km radius of
home, cyclists can also meet up with people from one other household.

And from April 26th
– two weeks from now – children of school-going age with be able to train
outdoors in groups, or pods, of up to 15 people.

Also from that date, April 26th, a range of cycling
facilities will be permitted to open again, such as BMX tracks and the
velodrome at Sundrive Road, Dublin.

However, group training for adults is not permitted in the Republic of Ireland until further notice. And that does not change on April 26th as only underage group training is permitted from that date.

Northern Ireland

As the vaccine roll-out in the North is significantly
ahead of the Republic, some measures that can relate to cycling activities have
already been relaxed before now while further changes now come into force.

For the last 12 days, for example, groups of up to 10
people – adults and/or children – from up to two households have been permitted
to meet up for structured outdoor activities and outdoor sports facilities have
also been allowed to open.

And from today, April 12th, groups of up to 15 are
permitted to meet for outdoor sports training via clubs affiliated to a recognised
governing body.

People, including cyclists, in the North have been urged
to stay local and not travel more than 10 miles from home for exercise.
