Gabriele Glodenyte has capped a breakthrough season with overall victory in the women’s Cycling Ireland National Road Series 2022. The UCD Cycling Club rider emerged top of the standings after the fifth and final round in Dromore, Co Down, on Sunday.

Glodenyte ended the series with 175 points and held off her club mate Ella Doherty, who was 2nd on 161 points, to secure the overall win.

The two UCD riders were 3rd and 4th in the final round on Sunday and, because there were double points on offer, Glodenyte needed to make sure Doherty did not steal a march on her in the finale and finish several placings ahead.

After the two team mates in 1st and 2nd overall - both of whom were the only riders to score in all five rounds through the season – Eve McCrystal (Bellurgan Wheelers) was 3rd overall with 140 points.

Overall winner Glodenyte recorded her big result in the series when she won round 4, the Brian O’Loughlin Memorial, ahead of Caoimhe O’Brien (Torelli-Assure-Cayman Islands-Scimitar) and McCrystal after that trio formed the winning move.

McCrystal won the Meath Grand Prize and was 2nd in the final round on Sunday. The winner of that final round – Lara Gillespie of UCD Cycling Club – got double points, 80, for her win. That bumped her up to 6th in the series, though she only rode one round and had not ridden a road race for two years.

We’ll have more from series winner Glodenyte later.
