Global Cycling Network, which has just signed former Irish professional Conor Dunne as a presenter, is opening its sixth channel.
The network, which is owned by the Play Sports Group, is
opening a new German language version; GCN auf Deutsch.
Play Sports Group already has 10 sports channels, with
four of them different language versions of GCN.
The first channel, which most Irish cyclists and fans will be familiar with, was the Global Cycling Network English language operation.
That channel was established in 2013 and was followed by the toll out of a Spanish GCN and an Italian version, both in 2018.
Last year a Japanese GCN was launched and now the German channel brings the number of cycling channels to five.
Play Sports Group said the channels had reach two billion views on YouTube, adding the channels had a combined 20 million viewers per month.
The new German channel will be host by recently retired professional cyclists Björn Thurau and Mario Vogt.
Thurau (31) retired from pro cycling at the end of last year after 12 years in the peloton including a season at WorldTour team Europcar and Bora-Argon alongside Sam Bennett in 2015.
Vogt (27) hung up his racing wheels at the end of last year after nine years as a pro, four seasons of which was with German Continental team Red-Net Rose Team He won Tour de Iskandar Johor (2.2) in Malaysia last year; one of nine pro victories.
“We’ve been planning a German-language GCN channel for a long time. It’s a hugely important market with great cyclists, cycling fans, some brilliant brands and events,” said Play Sports Group founder and chief executive Simon Wear.
“The German-speaking audience is already highly engaged with GCN, so we’re very much looking forward to providing bespoke new and unique videos in the German language and welcoming new viewers to our channel.”
The launch of GCN auf Deutsch follows one year on from the announcement that Discovery Inc, which owns Eurosport, had acquired a majority stake in Play Sports Group.
