Giro riders get off bikes, into team buses as protest scraps 150km off stage | Video

The race getting underway today, but just 8km into the action the riders stopped and got into their team buses as part of a protest

The Giro d'Italia riders have climbed off their bikes shortly after the start of today's stage 19 and got into their team buses in a protest that appears to have shortened the stage by about 150km.

The riders were deeply unhappy at the length of today's stage; some 258km from Morbegno to Asti.

Some of the riders began to raise their concerns with the race organisers last night, to no avail. Shortly after the start today, as the rain poured down, the riders decided to stop and get into their buses.

They have now decided to drive 150km down the stage route and today's stage - at the time of writing - looked set to be about 100km.

However, at the time of writing the situation was fluid and the extent to which the stage has been shortened may change.

Italian broadcaster Rai has reported the stage would re-start in Vigevano, which would make for a stage of about 100km, approximately 150km shorter than the one initially planned.

The riders objected to the fact the stage was so long after a race of lengthy stages, many in the mountains, which involved long transfers in the evenings.

More to come.
