Elia Viviani is helped up by his team mates after an incident on the Giro in which a moto driver accidentally drove into the back of the Italian sprinter

A race official on a motorbike has been fined and removed from the Giro d'Italia after a crash with Italian sprinter Elia Viviani on stage 11 yesterday.

The Cofidis rider crashed after a motorbike driver was within the bunch coming to a roundabout and appeared to accidentally drive into Viviani's bike from behind.

The Italian rider was forced into a long chase before regaining contact with the peloton and eventually finishing 10th in the sprint finish won by Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ).

The driver, who appeared to be caught by surprise and was in the wrong place when the race reached the roundabout, was fined and taken out of the Giro for breaching "regulations or guidelines concerning vehicle movements during the race".
