The Giro d'Italia 2020 edition has been postponed and a new date for the race, if there is one, is set to be announced at some point after April 3rd.
In a statement, below, the race organisers said the authorities in Hungary, where the first stages of the event were due to be held in May, had declared a state of emergency.
This was due to the coronavirus COVID-19 and meant it was "impossible to organise international events there".
The Giro organisers also said they had considered the situation with the virus in Italy and internationally and had decided to postpone this year's race as a result.
"RCS Sport, having taken note of the international and national situation, announces that the date of the 2020 Giro d’Italia is thereby postponed," it said in a statement.
"The new date will be announced no earlier than 3 April when the (emergency lockdown – Ed) provisions of the Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic of March 4th will end."
RCS Sport added it would set a new data "only after having consulted with the appropriate representatives of the Italian Government, local and territorial authorities and Italian and international sports institutions".
