History-making Giro stage winner Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) was forced to miss the post-stage press conference today after injuring his eye on the podium.

The 22-year-old, who had just become the first black African rider to win a stage on a Grand Tour, bent over on the podium to pick up a bottle of prosecco when the cork exploded out and hit him in the eye.

He persisted with the presentation but was clearly grimacing and news soon broke he had been taken off to hospital to have the left eye injury checked out.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix), who was 2nd today, also had a similar cork mishap on the podium at the start of the race, though he was hit in the face rather than in his eye.
