Girl (11) killed cycling, Gardaí say crash also involved driver in van

A young girl, aged 11 years, has died from the injuries she sustained in a crash while she was cycling. The crash also involved a driver in a van.

The fatal crash occurred yesterday evening in Co Kerry
and while the girl was taken from the scene to hospital she was tragically
pronounced dead in hospital last night.

Gardaí have now launched an investigation and they are
appealing for anyone who was in the area - Abbeydorney, outside Tralee - around
the time of the crash, or those who may have been recording video in the
locality, to contact them.

“Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision
that occurred 3km outside Abbeydorney, Tralee, Co Kerry, on Monday evening, May
10th, at approximately 7.30pm,” the Garda said in a statement.

“The pedal cyclist, a female aged 11 years, was seriously
injured during the collision. She was taken to Tralee University Hospital where
she later passed away. The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was removed to
Tralee University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

“The road remains closed as a technical examination of
the scene is being conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.  Local diversions are in place.”

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash to
come forward or anyone on the road travelling near Abbeydorney, on the R556,
between 7pm and 8pm to contact them.

Gardaí are also appealing for any video being recorded,
including dashcam footage, in the area to be made available to them. Tralee
