John Degenkolb on the way to winning Paris-Roubaix last year; he is one of the six in hospital after a car took them out head-on on the wrong side of the road in Spain.
After an horrific mass crash marred stage 5 of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina on Friday leaving one rider in an induced coma, the pro peloton is now digesting news that the Giant Alpecin team has hit head-on by a car in a training collision.
The riders were on a ride as part of the WorldTour team’s pre-season training camp in southern Spain and were near Calpe – where Irish team An Post-Chainreaction – are currently enjoying their training camp.
The team initially said the six men had been hospitalised as a precaution, though a statement issued this evening has confirmed all remain in hospital with the team saying it was “in shock”.
The team statement issued this evening said:
Six Team Giant-Alpecin riders were involved in a crash in training during the team training camp near Calpe, Spain, today.
“During the training ride, a car coming the other direction rode into the group of riders head on. The riders were riding side by side on their own side of the road.”
The riders involved in the crash were Warren Barguil from France, classics winner John Degenkolb from Germany, Chad Haga from the United States, Fredrik Ludvigsson from Sweden, Ramon Sinkeldam from Holland and German Max Walscheid.
“All the riders involved in the crash went to two hospitals and all of them are in stable condition,” the statement continued.
“Everyone on the team is in shock right now, and there are some major issues that we need to take care of, but we also realize that we have had some luck on our side,” said team physician Anko Boelens.
“Everyone is conscious, stable and approachable, but we are waiting for the latest information and consult the doctors in those hospitals about the treatments needed for the riders.”
“As soon as more medical information and the prognosis is known, we will provide an update.”
