Geraint Thomas crash Tour de Suisse: The Team Ineos man was taken to hospital after his heavy fall on stage 4 with about 30km remaining.
A dreadful year
already for Team Ineos just got worse after Geraint Thomas crashed out of the
Tour de Suisse.
His fall comes
six days after team mate Chris Froome suffered a season-ending crashed in a TT
recon ride at Criterium du Dauphine.
At the time of
writing Geraint Thomas had been taken to hospital for assessment.
He looked dazed
after the fall but appeared to be using both arms freely as he changed his top
sitting in the road.
The back of his
jersey was shredded and he looked to be holding his head initially. Thomas was
sporting a dressing over his right eye minutes later.
Team Ineos now
faces an anxious wait to see if he has the kind of injuries that rule him out
of the Tour de France.
The Welsh rider
is the Tour champion and having raced very little this year even missing the
remainder of the Tour de Suisse is a major setback for his Tour preparation, if
he does ride.
He crashed today
with about 30km remaining on stage 4, which took the riders 163.9km from Murten
to Arlesheim.
Thomas came down
with Andrey Zeits of Astana, who was also injured and forced out of the race.
They crashed on a
stretch of road with a cycle lane to their left and a small kerb or barrier
inches high separating the cycle lane from the road.
Team Ineos director Grabriel Rasch believed a crash
happened in front of Thomas and Zeits which then caused them to fall hard.
"He got a little cut over his eyebrow, which was
bleeding. The doctor felt it was safest to take him to the hospital for further
checks,” Rasch said of Thomas.
“We’ll have to wait until they check him properly, and
then we’ll know more,” he said, adding Thomas was like all riders in that he
would want to be back racing soon.
"They want to go back to the bike and race. But thankfully we have a doctor in the car and it’s his decision to make."
