Kiwi cyclist George Bennett jumped into the fray on behalf of Geraint Thomas after stage 14 of the Tour de France yesterday.
Bennett was part of the Jumbo Visma line-up that proved the strongest in the race; piling on the pressure up the Tourmalet on behalf of general classification hope Steven Kruijswijk.
Bennett pulled very hard toward the top of the mountain and his effort was largely responsible for putting Geraint Thomas (Team Ineso) into the red.
Just after Bennett pulled over and slipped off the back, Thomas was also dropped.
The two riders met each other and road together for a couple of hundred metres.
Bennett took to Twitter later to say that as he rode with Thomas he noticed people by the roadside booing him.
Team Ineso, of Team Sky as it was in previous years, has been unpopular at times at the Tour, especially last year just after Chris Froome was cleared of any wrongdoing over his salbumtamol test at the 2017 Vuelta.
And while there has been no news of any hostility this year towards Team Ineos, Bennett said today he noticed "absolute wankers" booing Thomas, urging them to stay at home.
Thomas jokingly replied to his Tweet saying that those by the roadside were booing Bennett, not him.
