Chris Froome put in an incredible ride at the Giro yesterday, and George Bennett seemed surprised at the finish.
The Kiwi riding for LottoNL-Jumbo made some remarks after the stage that caught fire on social media.
And now his team has moved to clarify the comments, which were made by Bennett in a video shot by team staff.
“Did he stay away, did Froome stay away?” Bennett asked the interviewer as he cooled down on the rollers after the stage.
When told not only had Froome, who is at the centre of a doping-related inquiry, stayed clear solo but had also taken the race lead he replied: “Bullshit?”
When the interviewer went on to inform Bennett that Froome now had a 40-second lead overall, Bennett smiled and said: “He did a Landis.”
In 2006, on stage 17 of the Tour de France, Landis attacked solo to win with an epic ride. He had imploded just the previous day and lost the race lead.
While he would go on to win the Tour, his dope test result for stage 17 contained testosterone and he was eventually stripped of the victory.
After George Bennett’s video remarks were shared by his team and viewed hundreds of thousands of times, the squad felt the need to explain the comparison to Landis.
“Disclaimer to avoid any misinterpretation,” LottoNL-Jumbo’s follow-up Tweet began.
“This is not an insinuation, but a way to express the admiration for an exceptional achievement. Congratulations to Chris Froome and Team Sky.”
