Having been chief executive of Cycling Ireland for a decade Geoff Liffey is now departing the organisation.

The move was announced in a statement by Cycling Ireland this afternoon.

While it did not quote Liffey, an engineer by profession whose home club is Finglas Ravens, it explained he had decided to pursue a new challenge.

“After ten years with Cycling Ireland, Geoff Liffey has announced his departure as the chief executive of cycling’s governing body in Ireland,” the statement said.

“Geoff has decided to pursue a new career challenge. During his time with the organisation Geoff has overseen the significant growth of cycling in Ireland and led key strategic projects to fruition.

“This has included a membership increase of just over 500 per cent (and) a performance program delivering over 120 international medals."

Three big moments for cycling in Ireland during Geoff Liffey's time at the helm; the launch of the Great Dublin Bike Ride Sportive, Martyn Irvine crowned world champion in 2013, Katie George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal winning Paralympic gold in Rio 2016.

The statement continued that Liffey also oversaw the "roll-out of several new participation programs (and) greatly increased the organisation's turnover through increased funding awards".

“He will be leaving Cycling Ireland in a much better standing and finishes at the end of December.”

The president of Cycling Ireland, Ciaran McKenna, paid tribute to Liffey for his contribution to the sport and the national governing body.

“I’d like to thank Geoff for the enormous contribution he has made to the organisation during the past 10 years," McKenna said.

"(That applies) particularly to growing the membership base and creating the environment for our high performance achievements.

“I know he will be sadly missed by all his colleagues in the Cycling Ireland office, by the board, and by the membership and club network across the country.

“On behalf of the board and members of Cycling Ireland I would like to wish Geoff every success in his future career.”

We'll hopefully catch up with Geoff Liffey soon.
