Gavin Mannion takes biggest win at Colorado Classic
Gavin Mannion, the son of former Irish international cyclist Tommy Mannion, has taken a big victory at the Colorado Classic.
Mannion (26) claimed the 15.88km TT in Vail yesterday by 11 seconds from team mate Serghei Tvetcov.
British rider Hugh Carthy (EF Education First-Drapac) rounded out the podium at 21 seconds.
Gavin Mannion had finished in the reduced peloton of 40 riders some six seconds behind winner Gage Hecht (Aevolo) on Thursday’s stage 1.
That meant Mannion took the race lead from Hecht, a Junior Tour rider as recently as 2016, when he claimed the TT.
Mannion first hit the headlines when he won the US youth criterium title back in 2007.
Since 2010 he has ridden on Continental or ProContinental teams. He also spent a short stint as a stagiaire with Garmin-Sharp in 2014.
He is now in his second year with UnitedHealthcare and has achieved some big results since joining the squad.
As well as his victory and taking the race lead yesterday in Colorado, he took a stage in the Tour of the Gila earlier this year and was 2nd overall.
He also finished 11th overall earlier in the season at the Amgen Tour of California. And last year he was 2nd overall at the Tour of Utah.
His father Tommy Mannion was a very successful rider on the Irish scene before emigrating from Tuam, Co Galway, to the US in the late 1980s.
Mannion Snr was a double national champion as a junior and went on to have a successful senior career.
He was 3rd overall in the Tour of Ireland in 1980 and rode the Milk Race on the Irish team.
