Spikes on the wheel of a truck stopped by the Garda in Dublin. Truck drivers have been warned the modification is illegal and a danger to cyclists.
Gardaí have found a motorist driving a truck in Dublin fitted with steel spikes on its wheels ‘because it looks cool’.
It is warning anyone driving with the modification that the spikes are illegal and pose a risk to others, including cyclists.

The Garda shared an image on its Facebook page of the spikes found on the truck in Dublin of late to highlight the issue.
“Gardaí are appealing to all road users, in particular haulage companies and truck drivers, that altering any vehicle like this is highly dangerous and illegal,” its statement said.
“Gardaí encountered this truck driving in Dublin recently. Whilst the driver thought ‘it looks cool’; this poses a serious risk to cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users.
“The driver of the truck was required to remove these before continuing. Anyone who encounters a modified truck should report the incident to Gardaí.”
Offences due to truck wheel spikes
It also listed the “possible offences” being committed by those driving vehicles with wheels modified in the same manner. They include:
Section 13 ‘Endangerment’ in Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. And the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963.
The legislation states:
“A vehicle first registered on or after the 1st day of July, 1964, shall not have any inessential object in a position where it is likely to strike any person involved in a collision with the vehicle, unless injury is not likely to be caused by reason of the projection of the object.”
If you see any vehicles with wheels like these, get the registration number and ring the Garda.
