Gardai in Donegal have said they have noticed cyclists, including those in club colours, training on the roads of the county in recent days.
They have urged club cyclists, and those who are not
members of Cycling Ireland, to stick to the home trainer for now due to the
Covid19 crisis.
“Gardaí in Donegal have a good working relationship with
cycling clubs within the county and when time allows we do our best to assist
with their events. We look forward to getting back at it soon,” the Garda in
Donegal said in an online statement.
“However, we are now asking the clubs and the non Cycling
Ireland members for your assistance.
“Over the course of the weekend we have noticed club
colours and individuals on our roads and we are again asking you to adhere to
the guidelines.
“We understand as the days get longer and the weather
improves it’s hard to sit indoors on the turbo. All we are asking is for you to
stick with Zwift for another while.”
The statement was issued today, Monday, and comes just
days after Cycling Ireland said it had been informed by the Garda and the
Government that some cyclists were continuing to train on the roads.
At present everyone in the Republic has been told to stay
at home, save for exceptional circumstances; including an urgent family matter,
medical appointed or shopping.
People are still permitted to exercise but they must stay
within a 2km radius of home. Gardai have said while there has been widespread
compliance with the 2km rule some people have not respected it, including some
cyclists.
