News of the operation targeting cyclists, for breaking red traffic lights and failing to use lights on their bike, comes as nine people have been killed on road traffic crashes since the start of the year. All of the fatal incidents have involved drivers, four of whom were killed in the crashes, with four pedestrians and two vehicle passengers also losing their lives.

"Kilmainham and Kevin Street gardaí on patrol in Dublin city centre last night issued fines to 16 cyclists for breaking a red light or not having front/rear bike lighting," the Garda said of the latest operation.

Just before Christmas it emerged that only 71 drivers had been convicted in 2022 of dangerously overtaking a cyclist, which equates to just under three drivers being caught in all of last year in each of the 26 counties.

As well as the cyclist-based operation in central Dublin in recent days, gardaí in Lusk and Balbriggan in north Co Dublin also ran mandatory intoxicant checkpoints, at which all drivers who pass through are tests for alcohol and drugs.

"Over 450 drivers were tested for alcohol and drugs," the Garda said. "One person was arrested for drunk driving, and another for drug driving. Multiple vehicles were seized for various traffic violations, and fines issued."
