Gardaí stop cyclists who were out riding 50km from their homes

Gardaí from Dublin on patrol around the boundary with Co Wicklow encountered cyclists who were up to 50km from home

Gardaí have urged cyclists considering taking to the open roads despite the Covid19 measures in place to stay home instead.

Last weekend gardaí in Co Wicklow said they were continuing to encounter cyclists and walkers who were still venturing out.

And the previous weekend the gardaí in Co Wicklow said they had met "quite a few" cyclists out riding in the county, had stopped them at checkpoints and asked them to go home.

In the latest update, Garda Headquarters has said gardai on patrol around the Dublin-Wicklow boundary had yesterday encountered cyclists who were between 30km and 50km from home.

This was despite people being asked to stay in their homes unless they had a specific reason and for all exercise outside the home to be kept "brief" and conducted within a 2km radius of home.

“(Dublin Metropolitan) Roads Policing, patrolling the
Wicklow border, turned back a number of cyclists who were between 30-50km from
their homes,” the Garda said.
