Gardai are this weekend continuing to meet some cyclists
who were on “long cycles” despite a major publicity and enforcement campaign
aimed at urging people to stay home and comply with the restrictions in place
due to Covid19.
Garda Headquarters has also shared photos of other
cyclists being stopped along the coast in north Dublin, close to Clontarf and
Bull Island.
The cyclists were stopped by gardai for an information
message only; with gardai explaining the 2km exercise restriction to them and “urging
compliance” with it.
Restrictions introduced just over two weeks ago and which
were due to expire this weekend have been extended for another three weeks,
until May 5th.
This includes limiting taking exercise to within a 2km
radius of people’s homes. And people have been told to stay at home unless they
were making an essential journey or they were essential employees going about
their work.
A special Garda operation, involving over 2,000 Garda
personnel and checkpoints nationwide, is underway this weekend.
Deputy Commissioner John Twomey, speaking to the media at
a checkpoint in Julianstown, Co Meath, said members of the force were available
to older and vulnerable people to help them.
He added while the vast majority of people had complied with
the Covid19-related restrictions and only made essential journeys or exercised
within 2km of home, there were some exceptions.
This included gardai in some locations still meeting
cyclists who were out for long rides.
However, the photos of the cyclists pictured on the coast
in north Dublin were not the cyclists whom gardai said were taking long rides.
Some motorists were found to be in breach of restrictions
relating to them, with a number of people driving to beaches and other beauty
spots.
In one case a man who was driving from Tipperary to Limerick said he was making the journey to buy a trampoline.
