Gardai seize modified mountain bike on motorway

Most people cycling or driving on the roads will have seen bicycles modified to add small engines.

However, the modified MTB seized by the Garda yesterday had been give the full motorbike makeover.

We’ve seen modified bikes similar to this, with small petrol tanks on the crossbar to fuel an engine set-up added to the bike.

But the size of this particular set-up is new to us; it’s much bigger than others we’ve noticed.

The cyclist, or rather ‘driver’, of this bike was motoring down the M1 motorway in the south east when gardai spotted him.

The bike was seized from him and it will very likely be treated as a motorbike by the courts.

Those gardai who stopped him certainly took that view. They said the cyclist/driver had no insurance disc showing, no drivers licence and no helmet; no of which are offences for cyclists.

The owner of the bike will appear in court at a later date over those offences.

The photo and some scant details were shared on the Garda Twitter account. The tweet included a simple message: “stick to mountains and not motorways”.
