Gardai seek witnesses after cyclist killed in crash with car

Gardai have begun an investigation following the death of a cyclist from head injuries after he was hit by a car.

 

Gardai in Galway have launched a public appeal for witnesses after a cyclist hit by a car last week died from his injuries in hospital.

The collision occurred in Co Galway last Thursday, August 6th.

While the cyclist was taken to hospital from the scene and underwent medical treatment he has died from his injuries.

The dead man has been named as 43-year-old Kevin Smith from Ballyvaughan, a coastal village in Co Clare near the Clare-Galway county boundary.

Mr Smith was cycling when hit by a car at around 1.30pm last Thursday at the Co Galway townland of Ballyclery, on the Kinvara to Ballindereen road around 1km from the village of Kinvara.

He was airlifted from the scene and taken to University Hospital Galway, where he was treated for head injuries.

However, he never regained consciousness and remained critically ill until his death on Saturday evening at the hospital.

His passing brings to six the number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic so far this year, compared with 12 cycling fatalities in all of last year.

Gardai in Gort, Co Galway, are seeking assistance from members of the public who may have witnessed the collision or who are in a position to offer any information in relation to the incident.

The driver of the car that collided with Mr Smith was not injured.
