Gardaí race to save cyclist who suffered heart attack on weekend ride

Gardaí have released details of a recent incident in which a cyclist had a heart attack but was saved as a defibrillator was available

A cyclist out for a Sunday ride had a lucky escape when gardaí raced to his aid, with a defibrillator, and managed to save his life.

The gardaí responding to the incident got stuck in traffic in their patrol car, though one of them got out and ran to the scene, stopping off to pick up the public defibrillator on the way.

While the precise location of the incident has not been disclosed, gardaí said it took place in the Eastern region. They were alerted to the emergency on Sunday, October 10th, though details have only emerged now in a statement by gardaí.

"Gardaí in the Eastern Region responded to a 999 call reporting that a person had suffered a heart attack whilst out cycling," it said.

"The responding Garda alighted from the patrol car they were travelling in to avoid traffic and ran down the street to pick up the town’s public defibrillator before making their way to the scene.

"Upon arrival, the Garda immediately began using the defibrillator on the person, whilst another assisted in performing CPR.

"A short time later, paramedics arrived and took over the resuscitation of the person, who was then taken to hospital escorted in the ambulance by gardaí. The cyclist regained consciousness and received the appropriate medical care."

Details of the incident have emerged as 2,638 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest incidents were recorded on the 'Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Register' last year.
