Gardai in public appeal after Dublin cyclist hit by turning truck

The incident occurred at this junction; the truck coming from the same direction as the white van pictured, and turning left. The cyclist went straight and was taken out by the HGV.

Gardai have launched an appeal for witnesses to a collision in Dublin that has left a cyclist seriously injured.

The injured man was riding straight at a crossroads when he was hit by a truck turning left.

And while he survived the collision last Friday fortnight, April 14th, he is still in hospital.

Gardai investigating the collision have viewed CCTV of the crash. They say there were a large number of people cycling, walking and driving in the area at the time.

However, many of those witnesses have yet to come forward. And a public appeal has been launched urging them to do so.

The truck involved was turning left, from Grove Road onto Harold’s Cross Road.

However, the cyclist was going straight at the same junction and as the truck turned left it took him off his bike.

The truck driver was not injured. However, the cyclist was taken to St James Hospital from the scene and remains undergoing treatment.

Supt Michael Cryan said the investigation was continuing but was trying to find a number of witnesses who have not yet come forward.

Large number of people at the scene

“This collision occurred shortly before 4pm on Good Friday,” he said in a statement from the Garda.

“It is clear from CCTV that there were a lot of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the vicinity at the time. Their assistance is needed in establishing the exact circumstances of this collision.

“Gardaí would in particular like to speak with a male pedestrian who is seen on CCTV at this junction at the time of the collision. This male was wearing a black leather jacket with blue jeans.

“Gardaí would also like to speak with the occupants of a small boxed refrigerated white truck which travelled directly behind the HGV involved prior to the collision."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Crumlin Garda station on (01) 666 6400.
