Gardai now patrolling Grand Canal where cyclists attacked repeatedly

Garda Headquarters is clearly keen to publicise the patrols now being put on along the stretch of the Grand Canal where cyclists have been attacked repeatedly

Garda Headquarters has taken to social media to emphasise the fact patrols are now being run along the Grand Canal in Dublin where cyclists have been repeatedly attacked.

The main Garda Twitter account has shared an image of a member of the force on the beat on the canal, accompanying an older person.

While the message made no mention of the attacks on cyclists, the spot where the image was taken is where the recent violence has occurred.

And it is no coincidence that this image has been shared after the recent media coverage of the cyclist attacks.

Cyclist Yaman Umuroğlu last week highlighted the fact he had been attacked by young teenagers on the Grand Canal near Bluebell.

He said his attackers may have been as young as 13-14 years, adding they had beaten him with iron bars and stolen his bike.

Other cyclists then raised other similar incidents with some saying their bikes had also been stolen in canal muggings.

In some cases the attackers had lit a line of fire across the path of the Grand Canal Greenway to slow the cyclists so they could be attacked.

Others told of being threatened and robbed by teenagers armed with knives, expressing their disappointment more had not been done to make the area safer for cycling.
