
Gardaí are warning cyclists all over the country that the
stormy weather this weekend may put them at risk on the roads.
A yellow weather warning, for high winds and heavy rain,
has been issued by Met Eireann for tomorrow, Saturday.
The national forecasters have also said a weather warning will be issued early tomorrow for Sunday as Storm Dennis hits the country through the weekend.
Gardaí have informed cyclists, and other vulnerable road users, that the expected extreme weather can very adversely affect them.
“Gardaí are appealing to the public to be extra cautious
as severe winds and rain are forecast from tomorrow morning valid to 9pm
tomorrow evening,” it said of Saturday’s weather.
“Cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians should be aware
of the danger posed by high winds as they are particularly vulnerable.
“Drivers of high sided vehicles should take all necessary
precautions and pay attention to the warnings.
“We ask people living near coastal, cliff and waterway
areas, particularly those with children, to be extra cautious considering the
gusty winds forecast.”
Met Éireann’s status yellow wing warning for Saturday is
in place from 3am until 8pm
“Very squally southerly winds veering southwesterly with mean speeds 50 to 65 km/hr gusts to around 100 km/hr, strongest on exposed coasts and hills. Winds moderating from the Northwest later,” Met Eireann has said of Saturday.
“Outbreaks of heavy rain will extend nationwide during
the morning accompanied by gale force southerly winds.
“The rain will be squally at times with a risk of
embedded thunderstorms. Localised flooding is expected with some coastal
overtopping along the Atlantic seaboard. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12
degrees.”
The status yellow
rainfall warning applies for a 15-hour period, from 6am on Saturday until 9pm,
with “spells of heavy, locally
thundery rain” leading to flooding.
Sunday was expected to be: “Extremely windy and very
showery with stormy conditions in Atlantic coastal counties, especially
northwestern counties, with very severe and squally winds.
“Widespread heavy rain and hail showers with thundery
downpours at times, but drier and brighter at times in parts of the east and
south.
“Cold with afternoon temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees Celsius with a very significant wind chill factor. Showers and extremely windy conditions for a time on Sunday night."
