Gardai investigating as cyclist dies instantly after hit by car

A man has become the 10th cyclist to die on the roads this year after being hit by a car this afternoon.

 

A cyclist has been killed after he was hit by a car this afternoon in the Midlands.

The man’s death brings to 10 the number of cyclists who have lost their lives on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.

The victim of the latest collision, which took place in Westmeath this afternoon, was a man in his 70s. He has not yet been named by the Garda.

The victim was cycling on the N52 at 3.45pm when he was hit by a car driven by a woman, also in her 70s.

The emergency services were summoned but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital and a post-mortem will be carried out to tomorrow.

The road where the crash took place was closed off and the Garda said in a statement it would remain closed until tomorrow morning to allow an examination of the scene.

Garda have urged any witnesses to the crash to contact them and provide information.

“The collision occurred at approximately 3.45pm between a car and a pedal cyclist, the pedal cyclist a man in his 70s was fatally injured in a collision,” a statement from the Garda said.

“The collision occurred on the N52, four miles north of Mullingar. The man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The body of the deceased was removed to Midlands Regional Hospital with a post mortem examination expected to take place tomorrow in Tullamore hospital.

“The driver of the car (a female in her 70's) was uninjured. The scene of the collision is being examined by Garda forensic collision investigators and the road will remain closed overnight.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station 044-9384000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
