Gardaí are investigating a hit and run in Co Louth by a van driver who left the scene despite the fact the cyclist had been knocked to the ground and had sustained injuries resulting in his hospitalisation.
The hit and run occurred when the cyclist, a teenager from Co Louth, was out on his bike just before midday on Monday. His bike ride ended in the back of an ambulance being taken to hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.
It is believed the driver who hit the cyclist and then fled was in a black Ford Transit van, with gardaí now searching for him as he has not been located and has not come forward more than 48 hours later.
"Gardaí and emergency services responded to a traffic collision that occurred at approximately 11:50am on December 1st at Ravensdale Park in Drumad, Co Louth," Garda Headquarters said in a statement.
"A van collided with a cyclist in the course of this collision. The cyclist, a male juvenile aged in his late teens, was conveyed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained as a result of this incident."
Anyone with information, or who was in the area of Blackgate, Ravensdale, between 11:30am and 12:00pm on the day is asked to contact gardaí. The investigation team at Drumad Garda station is keen to speak to anyone who saw anything unusual in the area.
They have also urged anyone recording dash cam footage in the area, or who may have CCTV from nearby properties, to contact Drumad Garda station or Dundalk Garda station.
