Gardai investigate after cyclist hit by car dies at scene; driver uninjured

Gardai are investigating the first cycling fatality of 2015. The man's death follows a significant increase in cyclist fatalities last year.

 

Gardai in Co Mayo have launched an investigation into the death of a cyclist this morning after being hit by a car in Co Mayo.

The death of the pensioner is the first of year and continues a black period for cyclist fatalities on the roads.

Last year a total of 12 cyclists were killed, more than double the five who lost their lives in 2013.

The 67-year-old dead man killed this morning was hit by the car at around 11.30am in Knockakeery near the village of Aughagower in Co Mayo.

The collision occurred on a minor road around five miles from Westport.

The emergency services were called and the man was attended to by paramedics.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were taken to Mayo General Hospital where a post-mortem to determine the cause of death is due to take place.

A Garda statement said the driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was uninjured and did not required medical treatment.

The road where the fatality occurred is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.

An examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators is continuing.
