
Gardaí investigating the circumstances of a road traffic crash involving a driver in a car, and which left a cyclist seriously injured, have arrested a man. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the collision in west Cork.
The cyclist - who is in his 60s and is an avid leisure cyclist - was airlifted from the scene on the N71 at Barleyhill East, near Rosscarbery, on Thursday and was undergoing medical treatment for his injuries at Cork University Hospital.
The crash occurred at about 9am and gardaí from Clonakilty are carrying out the investigation. They have asked any witnesses, or anyone recording video in the area on Thursday morning, to come forward. Gardaí have also confirmed a man in his 20s was arrested at the scene.
He was taken to a Garda station in the southern region and was being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
"Gardaí are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to come forward," the Garda added. "Any road users who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and were travelling on the N71 between Rosscarbery and Skibbereen between 9:00am and 10:00am on Thursday June 1st are asked to make this footage available to gardaí."
