Gardai have appealed for members of the public who may have witnessed a cyclist being fatally struck by a car to come forward and aid the investigation.
Gardai have launched a public appeal for witnesses to a collision that has claimed the life of another cyclist on the roads of the Republic.
The latest fatality, in Co Kerry, brings to nine the number of cyclists who have lost their lives so far this year.
The victim of the latest crash was a man in his 30s who was in collision with a car on Sunday morning and died from his injuries.
The incident occurred at around 11.15am on the N22 at Scart, Farranfore; around half way between Tralee and Killarney.
“A male cyclist in his 30s was fatally injured when he was involved in a collision with a car,” a Garda station said.
“He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Kerry General Hospital. The driver and passenger of the car were not injured.
“The road was closed for a time to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators but has since reopened.
“Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6671160, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
While the number of cyclist deaths had been falling before last year, the trend to date in 2015 represents a continuation of the increased fatalities seen last year.
To date in 2015 there have been nine cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic, according to the Gardai.
There were 12 cyclists killed in all of last year; more than double the five cycling fatalities in 2013.
Gardai have recently warned the winter months are the most dangerous time of year for what they describe as vulnerable road users, including cyclists.
