
Gardai have appealed for witnesses following the death of another cyclist, who was injured in a crash on a busy city street.
Gardai in Cork have issued an appeal for witnesses after a cyclist injured in a crash in Cork lost his fight for life in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday.
The dead man has not yet been named but is believed to be a 48-year-old from Togher, Co Cork. The fatal accident occurred on Shandon St, Cork city, at around 5:40pm yesterday.
The exact details of how the man fell from his bike are still being investigated, but gardai do not believe he was struck by a car or that there was any third party involvement.
One caller to the Neill Prenderville show on Cork’s RedFM radio station said he had witnessed the crash and suggested the cyclist was trying to use his feet to stop but hit a step or kerb and fell to the ground.
A Garda statement said the man had collided with a bollard and while he was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
The road was closed for a time to allow Garda collision investigation experts to examine the scene and has since been reopened.

The man’s death brings to seven the number of cyclists who have lost their lives on the roads in the Republic since the start of the year, compared to five deaths in all of last year.
The most recent fatal collision, before yesterday’s, occurred at Ballyvoile, Stradbally, Co Waterford, at approximately 6.50pm last Friday, when a car hit a 32-year-old man cycling in the area at the time.
The emergency services were alerted and while paramedics treated the injured man at the scene and he was taken to University Hospital Waterford by ambulance he was later pronounced dead.
On May 17th a man in his 40s died after being hit by a car from behind when cycling on the Ballaghadreen Road, about 2km outside Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo.
In Co Galway on April 23rd a cyclist in his 60s died when he was hit by a BMW on the Gort Road in Loughrea.
On February 3rd, a woman who was struck by a car the previous week in Tralee, Co Kerry, died in hospital from her injuries. The victim, in her 40s, was cycling from her own home in Tralee to visit a relative in the town.
On January 27th, a cyclist died when he was knocked from his bike in evening rush hour traffic in Dublin. That collision occurred at City West Road, Brownsbarn Roundabout, Saggart, just before 5.30pm.
While the deceased was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, he died a short time later at the hospital.
Another cyclist in his 40s was struck by a car at the Kilmurray roundabout in Castletroy on the outskirts of Limerick City on Wednesday, January 8th, and later died from his injuries.
