Gardaí appeal after unexplained death of cyclist found on roadside

Gardaí have launched an appeal for information and witnesses after a male cyclist was found unresponsive, and was later pronounced dead, on a roadside in Co Kerry yesterday morning

Gardaí are investigating the "unexplained" death of a cyclist in Co Kerry yesterday morning and have appealed for anybody with information – especially video footage - to contact them.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was found in an unresponsive condition on the roadside at Ardywanig, Milltown, near Castlemaine, shortly after 10.30am.

While the gardai released an appeal for information, the precise cause of the man’s death is not known. It is not clear if he crashed off his bike causing his death, if another road user was involved in the fatality or if other circumstances led to the man's death.

“Gardaí and emergency services were alerted and attended at the scene. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later,” gardai said in the statement appealing for assistance from the public.

“His body has since been moved to the mortuary at University Hospital Kerry. The local Coroner has been notified. Results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.

“The road was closed for a time to allow for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators but has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.”

The statement added any road users who may have camera footage and were travelling between 10am and 10.40am yesterday on any local routes around Ardywanig, Milltown, are asked to make the footage available to gardaí.

The road where the cyclist was found is, according to gardai, a minor road from the junction off the main Castlemaine to Firies Road (R561) at Rushen towards Ardywanig.
