Garda Headquarters has deleted a meme it shared about speeding drivers and cycling and has also apologised.
“The intended purpose of the post was to
highlight the danger of speeding and that drivers who consistently speed will
lose their licence,” gardaí said.
“In hindsight, the timing of the tweet
in question was regrettable. An Garda Síochána apologises for any offence
caused.”
The Tweet contained a meme that shows a
police officer filling out a speeding ticket for a driver caught speeding.
The photo included the words:
Driver: “What am I supposed
to do with this speeding ticket?”
Officer: “Keep it, when you
collect four of them you get a bicycle.”
Many Twitter users believed the
messaging suggested cycling was a substandard form of transport that only those
who were unable to drive, or had failed at driving, would consider.
However, most of the criticism was
reserved for the timing of the Tweet from the Garda, coming as it did on the
same day a cyclist was killed in a crash with a driver in a cement truck on
South Circular Road yesterday morning.
The Garda deleted the Tweet and
apologised while it also sent message to people to complained explaining no
offence was intended.
