With a freeze warning in place for the whole country, temperatures expected to hit -8 and up to 8cm of snow to fall in parts; gardai warn against cycling.
Garda warns against cycling during 24 hour cold snap
With temperatures already much lower across the country today, the Garda is warning against cycling for at least the next 24 hours.
Specifically, the request relates to Connacht, Ulster and Leinster from 11pm tonight, Saturday.
Met Eireann has issued an orange weather warning as temperatures plummet. Ice and significant snowfall is expected.
And if cyclists follow the Garda warning it will make tomorrow a day for the indoor trainer or for taking a break.
A status yellow warning, for low temperatures, is in place until 10am tomorrow across the entire country.
The AA has said motorists should increase their stopping distance 10-fold above the norm.
Most of the statement issued by the Garda about the weather relates to motorists; urging caution.
However, it said cyclists and motorcyclists should not be on the roads at all.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn, the head of roads policing, issued the appeal for those on two wheels to stay off the roads completely.
“Motorcyclists or cyclists should not comprise their safety by their 'need' to travel in icy or snowy conditions. Be safe,” he said.
His advice to motorists was: “Please be aware that visibility is reduced in snowy conditions.
"So drive slowly if you need to make a journey. Allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.”
There have already been falls of snow in parts of the country with more forecast. The Garda is asking motorists to heed the changing conditions.
Drivers should be aware that it takes longer to stop a vehicle on an icy road so slow down and make sure all snow is off their vehicles before setting off, the Garda said.
A status orange snow-ice warning has been issued by Met Eireann for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath and Meath.
Between 4-8cm of snow is expected and temperatures will dip as low as -8 Celsius.
A status yellow wind warning has been issued for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford until 12 midday tomorrow, Sunday. Gusts will reached up to 110km per hour.
