Garda holding 'Super Saturday' for cyclists in Dublin, here's the details

The Garda will be out at two locations tomorrow, Saturday, on what they are calling 'Super Saturday' for cyclists.

The Garda is holding a 'Super Saturday' for cyclists in Dublin at which security advice will be offered and free bike marking will be available.

Gardai will put on the service tomorrow morning in the Phoenix Park. They will be at the visitors' centre in the park from 10aam to 12.30pm.

And then later in the day the Garda effort moves to the nearby Luas and Irish Rail stations on Broombridge Road.

Gardai will be at that second location, in Cabra, from 2.30pm to  4.30pm. They will again offer advice in preventing bike thefts.

The bike marking service is being made available so bike owners can be traced in the event their bikes are stolen and recovered.

Gardai have said for many years that when they recover stolen bikes they often have no way of knowing who owns them. This is compounded by many victims opting not to report their bikes stolen.

Launching their ‘lock it or lose it’ campaign on bicycle security last month, gardai warned bike thefts were rising across the country.

There was a 7.5 per cent increase last year; from 5,684 bikes reported stolen in 2016 to 6,109 in 2017.

And while gardai could not say how much bike thefts were up of late; they confirmed the trend was higher.

They also said because many cyclists don’t report the theft of their bikes, the number of crimes was much higher than official figures suggested.
