
A cyclist has been killed in a hit and run by a motorist who abandoned his car minutes later and fled.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was killed in a hit and run in north Dublin.
The fatal collision occurred in the suburb of Clontarf at around 6.30pm yesterday.
Gardai said the car that left the scene was later found abandoned in nearby Marino and that the driver was now being sought.
The cyclist, a 62-year-old man, survived the initial collision but despite efforts to save his life he died a short time later in hospital.
His was the third death of a cyclist on the roads of the Republic to date this year.
A Garda statement on the latest fatality confirmed the dead man’s age and the fact he was killed after being struck by a car.
“The collision occurred on the Clontarf Road at the junction with Howth Road,” the statement said.
“The cyclist was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
"The car involved in the collision, described by witnesses as a silver coloured Volkswagen Golf, failed to remain at the scene.
“Gardai recovered a silver Volkswagen Golf a short time later in Marino. The car has been seized for a technical and forensic examination.
“The scene was examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic.
“The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out later today.
“Investigating gardai are appealing to the driver of the car to contact them.
"They are also appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who observed a silver Volkswagen Golf (05 D registered) in the vicinity of Fairview, Clontarf Road and Marino area between 6.15pm and 6.45pm to contact the incident room at Clontarf Garda Station.”
