The cyclist riding on the motorway that the Garda now accepts isn't a motorway. Yet the clip is still be used to warn cyclists against riding on motorways, saying it's illegal.
Garda cycling on motorway warning remains despite correction
The Garda has made a correction, of sorts, to the cyclist in the snow video it shared on Facebook on Wednesday.
Clearly the clip, below, was recorded by somebody driving a car in the snow. But it was used as a warning against cyclists riding on motorways.
There was no warning over the motorist using their phone to record a video while driving; and doing so in such dangerous conditions.
The clip has caused a bit of an online storm, having been shared as it was on the Garda’s official account with over 170,000 followers.
It has now been viewed over 150,000 times, been shared over 700 times and prompted almost 600 comments.

Many of those posting pointed out that the clip was recorded on the Navan Rd, Dublin. It’s a dual carriageway and there is also a cycle lane on it.
Unusually, the Gardai did not use the clip to warn cyclists against riding in the snow; the warning was about cycling on motorways.

It read: “Please use common sense! Bikes are not permitted on a motorway today or any other day!”
However, the Garda has now accepted the clip wasn’t on a motorway. One would have thought it would have been taken down as a result.
Or maybe the warning even switched to a snow-based warning; perhaps urging cyclists not to ride on roads in this condition.
Instead, the Garda decided to leave the initial warning it place. It simply added the following to it: “Correction this was on the N3 Navan road”.
So we now have a warning on the Garda Facebook account about cycling on motorways even though the warning points out there’s no motorway in the clip.
The Garda probably meant well. And if the warning had been about cycling in the snow, it would have been accepted.
It is unfortunate they muddled it so badly, especially so soon after the controversy cause by its recent Twitter poll.
