Garda clampdown at dangerous Dublin junction after cyclist complaints

A new lay-out at the junction where Donna Fox was killed has been abuse by motorcyclists like this. But now after complaints the Garda has responded.

Gardai have begun an operation to catch motorcyclists abusing a new safety measure at the Dublin junction where cyclist Donna Fox was killed last year.

The Dublin Traffic Corps has been appearing at the junction after stickybottle readers highlighted the fact motorcyclists were using the cycle lane.

The junction in the north inner city is a very dangerous one and the Garda's responding to complaints from cyclists is a very welcome development.

Last week we brought you photos by stickybottle reader Nick Keegan showing motorcyclists are driving into the cycle lane.

It was supposed to be segregated from vehicles on the road by the flexi-wands.

The flexi-wands were put in place shortly after Donna Fox was killed last September.

She was hit by a truck turning left the junction of Sheriff St and Guild St in the north inner city.

Since the flexi wands were put in place, the cycle lane was segregated and the wands also forced vehicles to take the turn left at a much wider angle.

This gave cyclists more room at the junction, though the steel barriers remain in place.

The photos we published last week, below, showed a motorcyclist using the cycle lane to get to the top of the line of traffic stopped at the lights.

And since the problem was highlighted on Twitter and by stickybotte, gardai have taken action.

They have deployed personnel to the junction to both deter further infringements and to catch those abusing what is supposed to be a safety measure for cyclists.

Donna Fox was a very experienced cyclist who was well used to cycling in the city and trained and rode sportives.

Donna lost her life at the junction where the turn left is treacherous.

Steel barriers on the side of the road where she was fatally injured create a danger zone.

Cyclists or pedestrians could be crushed by vehicles taking the turn left too tight.

Dublin City Council erected the flexi-wands and put down new road markings in a bid to create space for cyclists.

Stickybottle covered the junction upgrade with a video story in December, which you can view by following his link.

Hopefully the Garda presence at the junction will deter any further infringements.
