This CCTV footage released by the Garda - Irish police - shows just how easily a badly locked bike can be stolen by thugs like this one.
CCTV shows how easily poorly locked bike is stolen
The Garda has released this CCTV video showing how easily a poorly locked bike can be stolen on Irish streets.
It was published as part of the 'lock it or lose it' campaign, which you can read about here.
Gardai yesterday launched the public awareness campaign aimed at encouraging cyclists to take all the safety precautions they can.
The cyclist who owns the bike in this clip had at least met two of the Garda's recommendations to prevent bikes being stolen.
The bike is at least locked. And it was also locked to an “immovable object”. However, the lock gives way relatively easily and is of poor quality.
Furthermore, the bike is locked quite badly. Gardai recommend bikes are locked as tightly as possible.
It they are fixed loosely it means those intent on taking your bike have plenty of leverage to use the bike's weight to simply yank the lock open, as is the case in this clip.
If this lock was tighter, the man who stole the bike wouldn't have had the same leverage to bust the lock open.
It may not have saved the bicycle this time, though it would have made the theft much harder.
A better quality lock fixed more tightly would offer a lot more security than this locked did.
