
Gardai in Co Mayo are investigating the death of a cyclist in his 40s. His was the fifth cyclist fatality on the Republic's roads so far this year, equal to all of last year.
Gardai have renewed their appeal for witnesses to a road collision in Co Mayo in which a local man in his 40s for knocked from his bike and killed.
The death of Jarlath Kelly of Derrynacong, Ballyhaunis, was the fifth cyclist fatality on the roads of the Republic so far this year, the same number as in all of last year.
The latest incident occurred on the Ballaghadreen Road, about 2km outside Ballyhaunis, at 11.45am on Saturday.
Reports locally said when Mr Kelly was struck there was a car behind him and also coming towards him at the scene at Classaghroe.
Mr Kelly was struck from behind and suffered fatal injuries. While the emergency services were called and paramedics attended to the victim at the scene, he was pronounced dead there.
The driver of the man car that hit the victim was taken from the scene to Mayo General Hospital where he was discharged after a short period.
The dead man’s funeral was due to take place tomorrow morning, Wednesday, and gardai are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the collision to contact them.
Gardai in Swinford station are carrying out the investigation and can be contacted on (094) 9252990. The scene of the collision was sealed off last Saturday and crash scene experts examined the location for a number of hours.
Mr Kelly’s death comes after a very bad spate of cyclist fatalities on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.
The most recent death before Saturday’s occurred in Co Galway on April 23rd. A cyclist in his 60s died when he was hit by a BMW on the Gort Road in Loughrea.
On February 3rd, a woman who was struck by a car the previous week in Tralee, Co Kerry, died in hospital from her injuries. The victim, in her 40s, was struck by a car as she was cycling from her own home in Tralee to visit a relative in the town.
On January 27th, a cyclist died when he was knocked from his bike in evening rush hour traffic in Dublin. That collision occurred at City West Road, Brownsbarn Roundabout, Saggart, just before 5.30pm.
While the deceased was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, he died a short time later at the hospital.
Another cyclist in his 40s was struck by a car at the Kilmurray roundabout in Castletroy on the outskirts of Limerick City on Wednesday, January 8th, and later died from his injuries.
