Full incident that cost Alaphilippe dearly at Tour de Suisse | Video

Julian Alaphilippe was in the wars again today at Tour de Suisse when he was caught taking an illegal feed in the closing stages and docked a not insignificant 20 seconds

Julian Alaphilippe is counting the cost of taking an illegal feed in the closing kilometres of stage 5 at Tour de Suisse today as he was penalised 20 seconds.

And with the top five riders overall covered by just over one minute, that time penalty has cost Alaphilippe dearly. He is now 4th overall, some 53 seconds behind yellow jersey Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), who won today's stage.

Jakob Fuglsang (Astana Premier Tech) is 2nd overall, at 26 seconds, after he was the only rider with finish today with Carapaz. And Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) is 3rd overall at 38 seconds.

Alaphilippe went back to his team car to take a bottle and a gel from the Deceuninck-QuickStep vehicle, saying after the stage he was under pressure at the time. But as the riders were deep inside the final 20km of the stage, and the race is a WorldTour event, that feed was not allowed.

It's not the first time Alaphilippe has been caught out by that rule limiting feeding in the final 20km of WorldTour races. He lost the yellow jersey in the Tour de France last year when he took a bottle from a team helper on the roadside during stage 5. The time penalty he incurred lost him the race lead, which passed to Adam Yates as a result.

The commissaire had a perfect view of the incident today at the Tour de Suisse as he was looking on through the sun roof of his car which was between Alaphilippe and the back of the select group.

As Alaphilippe moved away from his team's vehicle to get back into the group, he exchanged words with the commissaire; the world champion looking animated as he said his piece.

The chasing group he was in, which numbered just eight riders, was 15 seconds down on Fuglsang and Esteban Chaves (BikeExchange) with just under 9km to go at the time of the incident.

Eddie Dunbar was on the front of the group driving the pace in a bid to set up Carapaz for a shot at victory and taking the race lead, which proved successful on both fronts. The Irishman put in an excellent ride today, as he has done all week.

At the end of the stage Alaphilippe was given the news that he had been penalised by 20 seconds, which cost him one place in the general classification.

The Frenchman finished 7th on the stage today and in the six-man chasing group that was 39 seconds down on stage winner Carapaz and runner-up Fuglsang.
