Frustrating weekend for Irvine finishes with below par Olympic omnium result

Ireland’s Martyn Irvine

Ireland’s Martyn Irvine has finished his first Olympics with perhaps not the result he was hoping for, taking 13th place in the final standings after his six races over two days in his omnium event.

He went into the second day of competition yesterday, Sunday, in 10th place after the first three events.

While he has performed at a much better standard over the past 18 months at World Cups and other major meetings, his racing generally at these Games was slightly off his top end.

On the second day of competition, he opened with 14th place in the 4km Individual Pursuit on a time of 4:32.948. Things went better in the scratch race, with Irvine mixing it up and chasing victory in that race before he was overhauled towards the end and forced to settle for 9th.

In the concluding race, the 1km TT, Irvine perhaps paid the price for his massive effort in the scratch race and he finished 11th on a time of 1:04.558.

That left him 13th overall. We’ll have more later.
