Froome postpones return as reality of injuries and more surgeries sets in

Chris Froome is in Japan but decided to sit out a 59km criterium, saying his condition is not up to it and revealing he also needs more surgery

Chris Froome said within weeks of his crash in June that he was hoping to ride some demonstration races before year end but he has missed his first target.

The 34-year-old
four-time Tour de France winner has revealed he needs more surgery to remove
supports inserted after his crash.

And because his
condition was also not good enough at present, he decided to miss the Saitama Criterium, though he is at the race.

"I think I'm in an extremely fortunate position that
I am even back on the bike again at this stage," Froome said.

"I had some pretty horrific injuries and I've still got to have another surgery. I've
got to remove some of the
metalwork in my hip and my elbow at the
moment."

"It's gone extremely well but I've got a long way to
go and I've got a lot of work to do."

He explained that
while he could start the TTT in Japan, riding the road race – though only a
short 59km demonstration criterium – was not possible given his condition.

“My recovery’s
gone extremely well but I’m not quite at the point where I can be in a racing
peloton and accelerating out of corners,” he explained.

Froome crashed during a recon of stage 4 TT at Critérium
du Dauphiné back in June.

He crashed hard as he neared the end of his recon ride in
Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes; a gust of wind catching his front wheel and send him into
a wall at high speed.

And having been treated and examined by local medics a
right femur fracture was diagnosed. He also suffered a broken elbow and broken
ribs.

Just last month he was back in surgery when he sliced tendons in his hand while using a kitchen knife at home.

Chris Froome is even Japan and has even ridden on the Olympic road race course. But he has decided not to race saying things like accelerating out of corners would be too much for him
