Dan Martin has retained his 5th place overall at Volta a
Catalunya after stage 5 on Friday failed to bring about any re-ordering of the
general classification.
The stage was won from a breakaway by Bora-hansgrohe's
Max Schachmann; the German holding off the reduced peloton.
He was claiming his second win of the year after taking
GP Industria & Artigianato (1.HC) in Italy earlier this month.
Schachmann spent the day in a four-man breakaway on the
188km stage to Sant Cugat del Vallès. But he managed to get clear of them on
the penultimate uncategorised climb.
Stage 2 winner
Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb)
claimed the sprint for 2nd place at 13 seconds.
And though a
two-second gap emerged behind Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Merida) in 6th it wasn’t enough to impact on the
general standings.
Yesterday’s
winner Miguel Ángel López (Astana)
still leads overall, with two stages to come, by 14 seconds from Adam Yates
(Mitchelton-Scott).
Egan Bernal (Team
Sky) is next, another three seconds back. Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) is 5th
at 46 seconds.
Saturday’s stage
6 is undulating but features just two cat 3 climbs before the race concludes on
a very lumpy circuit in Barcelona on Sunday.
Bernal was forced
to walk over the line today when he suffered a late mechanical that completely
disabled his bike.
Team mate Chris
Froome then stuck the young Colombian on his handlebars and gave him a front
carry back to the team bus in what were comical scenes.
However, because Bernal’s bike problems occurred well within 3km to go, he lost not time in the general classification.
