Chris Froome (Israel Premier Tech) has abandoned the Dauphiné ahead of the big climbing finale this weekend. The British rider, who recently said he believed he was only now fully recovered from his bad crash in 2019, said he had been feeling unwell in recent days.
“I was looking forward to the final two stages of the Dauphiné, but I haven’t been feeling 100 percent,” Froome explained before the start of Saturday's stage 7.
“It’s disappointing to leave the race unfinished, but I’ve been progressing well, and I don’t want to set myself back at this important stage of the season.”
Withdrawing from the Dauphiné is a big blow for Froome as he had hoped to hone his form ahead of a hoped-for ride in the Tour de France. He recently finished 11th at Mercan'Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes and was also due to ride Mont Ventoux Challenge next Tuesday.
More to come.
