Freak crash mars sprint for stage win at Tour de l'Avenir | Video

A freak crash at the end of today's 6 of Tour de l'Avenir marred what was another exciting finale. As the 19-rider front group was sprinting it out for victory into Oyonnax one of the riders from Norway crashed in the middle of the group.

He took out Welay Hagos Berhe, who is riding a the UCI composite team this week. The Ethiopian rider came detached from his bike, which flew through the air across the road, and across the finish line. The bike then took out two riders on the opposite side of the road.

Both Britain's Leo Hayter and Germany's Hannes Wilksch were hit by the flying bike after they crossed the line and were knocked into the crowd control barriers, Thankfully it appeared both with able to dust themselves down, though the rider from Norway and Hagos Berhe had hit the deck very hard.

The crash did not impact the outcome of the stage as it occurred just behind the front clutch of riders sprinting it out for victory, with the honours going to Romain Grégoire (France). You can read our full stage report from today's stage by following this link.
