Easter racing "under dark cloud" after sad passing of Frank Gibson

Frank Gibson was one of the organisers of the Gorey Three Day and sadly his death has been announced as the race was getting ready for the off this weekend.

Irish cycling is mourning the sudden passing of Frank Gibson, one of the longest serving volunteers in the sport and a true stalwart of the home scene.

Frank was among a group of people who worked away tirelessly
in the background of Irish cycling, helping to ensure the survival of the Irish
road racing scene.

He was a member of Irish Road Club; the Dublin-based outfit that has promoted races such as the Junior Tour of Ireland and Gorey Road Club.

People across Irish cycling will know Frank as a good
humoured and social man who had traveled all over the country operating photo
finish cameras on the road racing scene.

However, his involvement in the sport goes back four
decades and he was also the former chairman of the Dublin-based Irish Road Club.

As his club prepared this morning for the start of the
Gorey Three Day, which Frank helped to promote annually, it announced Frank’s
sad passing.

“Usher Irish Road Club are shocked and saddened to
announce the sudden passing of our former club chairman, friend and one of the
most dedicated volunteers in Irish cycling, Frank Gibson,” it said.

“Frank’s involvement in the sport almost 40 years brought
him across the country and across the world operating the photo finish camera
for Cycling Ireland with dedication and pride.

“For us, the promoting club of the Junior Tour and the Gorey Three Day of which Frank was part of the organising committee, the race will be continuing as planned today but under a very dark cloud for the race organisation, riders and volunteers.”

Indeed, Frank will be remembered by a great many people on the road racing scene this weekend; the vibrancy of the Easter fixtures exactly the kind of racing he always enjoyed.

Here at stickybottle some of us have known Frank for many years and we would like to extend our sympathies to Frank's family, loved ones and friends at this very sad time.
