This €4,000 dress that was seen by over nine million viewers looking in at ITVs coverage of the Grand National was the high fashion version of the 1980s La Vie Claire cycling team kit.
She’s a leading sports presenter and a bit of as fashionista and now Francesca Cumani is mounting a one-woman bid to bring back the La Vie Claire kit.
Well, maybe not.
But the outfit she was sporting on ITV’s
coverage of the Grand National yesterday had more than a bit of 1980s Bernard
Hinault and Greg Lemond about it.
Her dress, which she looked fantastic in it must be said, was a copy of the La Vie Claire cycling kit, as the photo above shows.
The coloured panels on the dress were the
same as those on the jersey, and were even positioned in the same places.
All she was short of was some grey patches in the gúna and it would have been a complete copy.
Both the cycling kit and the Grand National dress worn by Francesca Cumani appear to be based on Piet Mondrian’s ‘Composition in red, yellow and blue’, below.
Dutch artists Piet Mondrian’s ‘Composition in red, yellow and blue’ - inspiration for the La Vie Claire cycling kit and now very expensive dresses.

The La Vie Claire kit was definitely based on the Dutch artist’s work.
And we’d bet money the designers of the Catherine Walker coat dress Francesca Cumani was wearing are familiar with his work from the 1930-40s.
Either that or the designers were avid fans of 1980s European cycling.
The dress will cost more than the La Vie Claire kit though, coming in at about €4,000.
