The French government is offering €50 to cyclists for bike repairs and servicing in a bid to encourage as much cycling as possible as the Covid19 restrictions are eased in the country.

One feature of the lock-down globally has been the improvement in pollution, particularly air pollution, in major cities.

The French government has seen a particular improvement in
Paris. It wants to maintain that situation, and reduce the spread of Covid19,
and believes bikes can be crucial in that regard.

In order to encourage as many people as possible to cycle as lock-down is eased, it is offering to reimburse people by €50 for any bike repairs they have done.

The Government is also establishing a register of 3,000 mechanics that can be used for the scheme. When bikes are repaired or serviced, €50 of the cost will be covered by the government scheme.

Under a new €20 million project, cycling training and bike parking is also being offered for those who prove willing to travel around by bike.

About six in
every 10 journeys taken in France is less than three miles and Elisabeth Borne,
the minister for environmental transition, believes as many people as possible
should be encourage to make those journeys by bike.

The French government believes the period in which lock-down conditions are eased will make for the perfect time to try and achieve that objective.

“We want this period to be a new stage towards a cycling culture and we want the bicycle to be the queen of Covid19 de-confinement,” Borne said.
