
RTÉ Sport has announced a long-list of 26 nominees for the RTÉ Sport Awards 2019 Sportsperson of the Year.
There are four cyclists featured; Sam Bennett and Lydia
Boylan and the Golden Girls – Katie George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal.
This long-lost will be whittled down to a shortlist (with no public vote at this stage) before the winner is revealed on RTÉ One, Saturday, December 14th, at 9.30pm.
The long list - 26 in the mix
SAM BENNETT
Took 13 wins this year including two stages at the Vuelta
and was one of the most successful professional cyclists in the world during
the 2019 season.
LYDIA BOYLAN
She won Ireland's first silver medal at the World Track Cycling Championship in five years; in the points race in Poland.

JACK BYRNE
The Shamrock Rovers played broke into the Irish national
team, won the FAI Cup and was named PFAI Player of the Year.
SEAMUS CALLANAN
He was the All-Ireland winning captain with Tipperary and
was named Hurler of the Year’.
STEPHEN CLUXTON
Dublin legend Cluxton captained the Dubs to their fifth
All Ireland title in a row and he was also named Footballer of the Year.
CATHAL DANIELS
The Galway man claimed bronze at the Longines FEI Eventing European Championships in Germany; Ireland’s first Europeans equestrian medal since 1995.

KATIE-GEORGE DUNLEVY and EVE McCRYSTAL
The paracycling pairing won gold at the Worlds, in the
TT, for the third year in a row and claimed silver in the road race.
ELLEN KEANE
Won bronze in the 100m breaststroke SB8 at the World
Para-Swimming Championships in London.
SINEAD GOLDRICK
The six-time All Star Sinéad Goldrick scored a crucial
goal in helping the Dublin footballers to their third All Ireland title in a
row.
NIAMH KILKENNY
The Galway camogie player is Camogie Association-WGPA
Senior Players’ Player of the Year and won the All Ireland this year for the
third time.
SHANE LOWRY
The pro golfer from Offaly won the Open’s Claret Jug in
Portrush and the Abu Dhabi Championship.
CIARA MAGEEAN
Ran a personal best in the 1500m final at the Athletics World
Championships in Doha, finishing in 10th place and won bronze in the European
indoors.
RHYS McCLENAGHAN
Became the first Irish gymnast event to win a medal at
the Worlds, taking pommel horse bronze in Germany.
RORY McILROY
He won the Players Championship, Tour Championship in Atlanta,
FedExCup and WGC-HSBC in Shanghai and was PGA Tour Player of the Year.
OISIN MURPHY
The flat jockey rode 166 winners and was British Flat
Racing Champion Jockey aged just 24 years.
DONNACHA O’BRIEN
The Irish Champion Flat Jockey for the second time on the
final day of the season at Naas.
AOIFE O’ROURKE
Became European Champion in boxing in Madrid in the 75kg
final; only the second female Irish boxer to do so.
DENISE O’SULLIVAN
Republic of Ireland soccer player helped North Carolina Courage
to the National Women's Soccer League title in the USA and was named Ireland Women's
Senior International Player of the Year.
SANITA PUSPURE
Retained her women's single sculls gold medal at the
Rowing World Championships. Also won gold in the single sculls event at the
Europeans in a new European record.
JONATHAN REA
Won a record fifth straight World Superbike title, eclipsing
Carl Fogarty's four World Superbike titles.
DAVY RUSSELL
He rode Tiger Roll to back to back Aintree Grand National
wins, the first time since Red Rum’s triumphs in the 1970s.
JASON SMYTH
The para-athlete claimed his eighth World Para-Athletics
Championships gold medal, winning the 100m in the T13 class.
KATIE TAYLOR
Unified all four world lightweight titles and became a
two-weight champion but also claiming the WBO super lightweight crown.
PAUL TOWNEND
He was crowned Irish Champion National Hunt
Jockey, riding 109 Irish winners including five Grade One victories.
NICOLE TURNER
The 17-year-pld won bronze in the 50m Butterfly S6 at the
World Para-Swimming Championships in London.
KURT WALKER
Won bantamweight gold at the European Games after beating
Mykola Butsenko of Ukraine in the final.
